Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) is not a new idea. In fact, it has been used for decades by many religious and community organizations. However, recently, it has gained popularity as a method to help individuals deal with personal problems such as addiction, depression, substance abuse, and the like. Many LPCs do not receive formal training; however, they are highly trained and skilled in their field. Because of this, many organizations prefer that a LPC take an accountability workshop in addition to taking the necessary licensing exams for their practice.
LPCs can work in many different fields. They can be therapists, counselors, spiritual teachers, and psychologists. There are many ways to find a local LPC. Your local churches, schools, and substance abuse centers may be able to refer you to a great LPC. Also, check out your state’s department of social services to see if they may be able to refer you to a qualified LPC.
Once you have found a LPC to work with, you will need to take an accountability workshop. This workshop will cover the many aspects of becoming a Licensed Professional Counselor. You will learn how to prepare for the licensing exam, and you will also learn how to work closely with a licensed counselor. You will be counseled and tested on your readiness to be a licensed counselor. This part will require that you take the licensing test. After you pass your certification test, you will be able to work in your state.
Next, you will be counseled on how to work closely with a licensed professional counselor. During this time you will learn how to work in an outpatient capacity, meaning that you will not be working with clients in a clinical setting. This workshop will also cover how to deal with families and children, and what types of interventions can be done to help someone suffering from depression, alcohol addiction, or other psychological problems. You will also be counseled on how to make sure that you are following the law when working with clients. Many times, people who are licensed counselors are not allowed to perform therapy at home. The workshop will go over what you should do if you want to continue to work at home and counsel clients using your own methods.
The last part of the LPC training will be on ethical behavior. You will learn how to make sure that you are working with good people and that you are providing them with the best advice possible. It is important that your work is ethical, and you should learn how to handle clients appropriately so that you do not get in trouble for breaking the law. You will also learn what kinds of questions you should ask a client before even sitting down to talk to them in person.
The third day of the LPC course will be the penultimate session. During this final session you will present a paper to the board for approval and sign it. This gives you the official license to work as a licensed professional counselor and that you have fulfilled all of the requirements to obtain a LPC. Then you will be available for initial interviews with potential clients. This will allow you to make sure that you are qualified for a position in your local area.
If you decide to become a licensed professional counselor you will need to make sure that you get as much LPC training as possible and that you take the time to check out all of the various programs available to find the one that will suit your needs the best. When you are in the process of looking for an LPC, make sure that you take your time and don’t rush into anything. Take the time to carefully evaluate all of your options and make sure that you choose the one that will best benefit you and your clients.
